The general theme of Robert WK Clark's “Artistic Nude Series” seems to be the transfiguration of the female form into an infinite array of shapes. The series as a whole is far more than the sum of its parts.
A variety of piece seems to shape a yin-yang: Fluidity and motionlessness, standing and sitting, hand open and hand closed. for example in one even the models are different: The blond sitting down is more filled-out, more voluptuous, and her blonde more radiant.
The work demonstrates femaleness both in its superhuman muscularity and flexibility and its candid vulnerability. The model, fully-formed, with no exposed ribs or jutting elbows, unlike the pieces demonstrating the full capacity of the body while remaining perfectly still.
The pieces with multiple models forming body parts are almost Dios de los Muertos-esque. They celebrate life and death as an ephemeral dance, two sides of the same coin. In the skull women forming the spine and the skull suggest to the viewer that life is a liminal state, an undeath trapped between unbirth and death. But the pieces celebrate death; they do not mounr it or keep it at bay.
In addition some show the malleability of the female form, not just into skulls but into parts of the landscape or part of the mise-en-scene. For example, the woman embraces the chair and the tile, becoming a beautiful part of the environment, her supple form cradling the chair close and her feet almost growing naturally out of the tile floor.
These pieces represent female nudity but they do not problematize it, commercialize it or sexualize it. We are seeing women at their most powerful and luminescent, not at their most exploited. Anyone who wants to demonstrate what the nude form and what sexuality can be to friends should consider this series.
