One can find solace when one is surrounded by flowers. This is the message that Robert WK Clark is channeling in his Flower Series. This particular piece is being modeled by Miranda Winn and was created last October 2010. In this photograph, it is presumed that the model is “at rest.”  However, instead of seeing the model’s entire body is such a position, what are visible in the photograph are her buttocks and portions of her right thigh and calf. The entire image is filled out by various flowers, predominantly chrysanthemums. In this Clark piece, one can enjoy a visual treat in this study of light and shade, this study of texture. This work is not a study in color contrast as the use of lavender and purple hues are predominant; thus, leaving little room for warm colors that can balance a work of art. To bring out the beauty of the chrysanthemums, dark-colored flowers are added and to contrast the implied softness and smoothness of the model’s skin, this creation displays the clarity of each petal. Cool colors are abounding in this masterpiece.

The cool purple colors are akin to the meaning of chrysanthemum flowers. Such flowers mean rest, optimism, joy, truth, long life, and cheerfulness. This piece brings out an impression of rest, relaxation and comfort. Winn’s crouching position means that it is all right for an individual to escape the harsh realities of life and seek comfort and solace. In this case, the flowers provide the “comforting factor.” The flowers can also be interpreted as an activity of a human being, meaning the relaxing and calm embrace of a mother, a lover or a friend. The shadows in this artistic entity mean the night and interpreted as time for rest and the time to recharge and get ready for the next day’s battles.  Robert WK Clark’s work is an excellent example of the use of shadows to create a certain relaxing mood.  This artistic piece is also a wonderful portrayal of the female form and is also a immense example of the balance of the objects: the model and the flowers, and indeed visually appealing.
