Robert WK Clark’s “Sand Series” is a fantastic collection of nude women in various poses.  However, Clark does not display the whole woman’s body.  Instead, he uses body parts partially covered by sand to invoke a message and to complement the surroundings.  An enthralling piece of the Sand Series is a photograph modeled by Katalya that was created on June 25, 2009 in New Mexico.  This Katalya photograph shows the model lying on her stomach, her body partially enveloped by sand.  The only visible parts of her body are her arms, part of her breasts, part of her buttocks and her thighs.  In the background are overcast cloud formations.  Her head is not shown and it is presumed that her head is buried in the sand.  This is an embodiment of various textures.  This photograph is a study of contrast in terms of static and dynamic.  When one looks at this photograph, one message is clear: Escape.

The model represents a typical human being with hopes, dreams, aspirations, and fears.  This photograph shows a human being’s fearful side.  The clouds in the background are angry, forceful and intimidating.  These are the emotions that the subject is running away from.  The sand represents shelter from the storm.  Thus, the human being escapes from the angry aspect of life and veers toward the safe side.  The sand protects the human from the outside world.  It protects the human from the outside forces that threaten to destroy the human soul.  The clouds show movement, meaning that anger and fear passes.  The skies would clear up any time and the human being can come out of his shelter to face the world again.  The photograph conveys a message that man must not always face his problems head on.  Man can also “hide” from his fears.  It is but a natural emotion.  This Katalya photograph is simply an astounding photograph of Robert WK Clark that evokes balance.  The top half of the photograph shows dynamism, movement.  The lower half of the photograph shows static, calm.  It indeed is a reminder that one can stall and think before tackling one’s issues in life.
