Flowers in art and photography have been used extensively throughout the centuries.  Robert WK Clark is one accomplished photographer who integrates elements like flowers, water, lingerie, jewelry, buildings, and land formations in his photographs of mainly nude women to create tasteful and stylish works of art.  Clark’s Flower Series is a playful yet visually soothing collection of women in relaxed poses.  One such photograph in the Flower Series is modeled by Miranda Winn and was created last October 2010 in New Mexico.  The photograph shows Winn’s bare buttocks surrounded by chrysanthemum flower variants.  One can assume that the model is sleeping on her side with her legs separated, judging by the position of her buttocks.  Every corner of her body (the legs, buttocks and waist) is enveloped by the chrysanthemums, which extends to the entire photograph.  The Winn photograph is so simple yet balanced.

This particular Clark photograph is essentially a study of balance, composition, and hue rather than contrast.  The color blue plays an important part in the photograph.  One would know that blue represents calm and rest.  The predominant flowers used, the chrysanthemums, also denote relaxation and stillness, which are important elements in the message of this photograph.  This photograph is also a study of texture, which draws the line between smooth human flesh and the irregularity of the flowers.  When one looks at the photograph, one can be put to ease.  It is an invitation to rest.  It means that at the end of the day, one should lie down to rest and recharge to ready himself for the next day.  It also means that when one has finished resting, one is fully recharged to tackle and go through the next day with energy.  It is an endless cycle of rest and activity.  Moreover, the photograph means rest and relaxation.  The Winn photograph is one of the best in Robert WK Clark’s Flower Series.  It strikes a soothing balance between smoothness and texture and it evokes a sense of playfulness even when one is resting.  Indeed, it is a complicated paradox yet so simple in its message.   Such a photo is a tribute to relaxation.
